Is freenet safe? I have heard it has a wider variety of content available and is not as censored but never tried it.

Some believe freenet is vulnerable and not as private as other programs as it splits little pieces of content and stores it across multiple computers, including yours. Whether it is vulnerable or not remains to be seen, but most stick to the most popular ones like Tor, etc

It has been questioned before if authorities have cracked it and used freenet in their investigations. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen.....

I have not used freenet, but it looked too complicated to run from what I observed. There are lots of alternatives now to consider. I would also think combining many at the same time would help increase privacy as opposed to using just one.
